LGBTQ Homelessness Issues

About Me and the Site

576917_10150780158051781_564687453_nI’m Nicki and I’m a fourth year gender and women’s studies major at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. This blog is the byproduct of a research project on issues faced by LGBTQ individuals experiencing homelessness. The title of the site “Out of the Closet and Onto the Streets” is a reference to the fact that many homeless LGBT youth are homeless as a result of their parents kicking them out after discovering that they are LGBT identified.  As a queer identified individual with many close friends who are also involved in the queer community and who have experienced housing insecurities because of their identities  I felt there was a need for me to explore the issues faced by LGBTQ identified individuals who are experiencing homelessness and what specific challenges are present in seeking shelter and services. Since LGBT individuals are so under represented in research on homelessness I feel it is important to reach out and look at the challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals and what can be done to make the system more welcoming and accommodating for these people.

A good place to start would be with the terminology page!
